St Peter and St James, Halwill
The parish church of St Peter and St James is located ½ mile outside the village of Halwill Junction in the original community hamlet of Halwill (Halwill “Town” as it is known locally). Look for the signpost to the left as you leave Halwill Junction going north.
The church dates back to Norman times. However, the base of a Saxon preaching cross can be seen in the church yard and it is thought that there has been a Christian community here for well over a thousand years. In Victorian times the church was refurbished and extended. Six bells are hung in the tower and are rung for major events.
The church is open daily for visitors and private prayer. Our interactive visitors’ centre at the tower end of the knave explains the story of the church, the village schools, the local railways (hence the nearby village is called Halwill Junction) and the local community. Information boards outside the churchyard and in the centre of Halwill Junction focus on highlights.
The church is surrounded by a traditional churchyard and many local families are buried here. Anyone researching family history should contact one of our church wardens.
We hold services twice a month – the first and third Sunday both at 11.00am. Week one is morning prayer and week three is Holy Communion. Weeks. We are a friendly crowd and all are welcome.
We are an active member of the local interdenominational group and we regularly share worship with our Methodist and Baptist neighbours.
